Get to the root cause of acne and improve scarring from previous breakouts.

What is Acne?

Acne is a common complaint amongst teenagers and adults alike. It is formed when bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil clog your pores, resulting in a breakout. If you are experiencing active acne, we recommend working with one of our naturopathic doctors to get to the root cause of your breakouts. Acne blemishes can often leave behind dark spots, scarring and pigmentation. We offer treatments that can reduce the appearance of acne scars.

Microneedling

Microneedling, a collagen induction technique is one of the best treatments for acne scars. This method uses small needles to perforate the skin, to stimulate collagen production that can smooth scars. A topical numbing cream is used before the procedure for comfort.

There are different treatment options for varying types and severity of scarring:

Classic Microneedling

We use the SkinPen for classic microneedling with hyaluronic acid, platelets, and/or growth factors. This is one of the best treatments for acne scars and can be done when active acne is not present. Your doctor will discuss options and help you decide which treatment is right for your skin type.

Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling

Radiofrequency has all of the benefits of classic microneedling, with the addition of radiofrequency energy. This acts as a skin tightener to firm up areas of loose skin, such as the cheeks, jaw, and neck.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reversing acne scars is possible with time, effort, and the right skincare plan. Hyaluronic acid or platelet microneedling is the best treatment for acne scars since it helps increase collagen production to fill in the scar and decrease any darkness or hyperpigmentation.

Hyaluronic or platelet microneedling is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure.

Grade 1 acne usually does not leave a scar, but higher-grade acne may. When acne presents as pustules, nodules, or cysts, it has a greater chance of scarring.

Yes, Hyaluronic acid or platelet microneedling should only be done when there is no current or active acne. For help with acne and other skin concerns, we recommend making an appointment with one naturopathic doctor to take a deeper look into the root causes of acne.

With a combination of topical prescription skincare and hyaluronic acid or platelet microneedling, acne scars can be treated so that they are no longer visible, depending on the severity of the scarring. It is very important to prevent future acne breakouts if this is a continual issue, and our naturopathic doctors can help with this.

Microneedling treatments are non-invasive, safe, and can be used on any skin type and color. Sterile equipment is always used and patients are advised on proper post-treatment skincare to avoid infection.

Most patients notice lighter and smoother acne scars starting 3-4 weeks after treatment. We recommend 4-6 treatments for optimal results.

Microneedling treatments usually take about 90 minutes, including time for your blood draw and numbing. The treatment duration depends on the number and size of the areas treated; for example, adding in the chest or décolletage will add about 30 minutes to the treatment time.

Microneedling can be done on any skin type and color. It should not be done on patients on blood thinners, with active acne or skin cancer on the face, or who are pregnant or breastfeeding. It should not be done if a patient has taken Accutane in the last 6 months, has open lesions, or has a current Herpes Simplex outbreak.

Avoid dermal fillers for 4 weeks before your procedure. It is recommended to avoid any skin exfoliants or vitamin A (Retinol, tretinoin, etc) topical products 3-5 days prior.

Downtime is very minimal. You can expect to be red with some sensitivity on the day of your appointment. Most people will choose to avoid any social events or activities after treatment. You will appear lightly sunburned for 2-5 days. You may also experience dry or flaky skin for up to a week.
