Laser hair removal procedure

Laser hair removal procedure

Laser hair removal uses a high-energy beam of light to effectively kill hair follicles while leaving surrounding tissue undamaged. This is possible because the pigments present in the hair follicles selectively absorb the energy of the laser. Laser hair removal is a safe and effective option for darker skin tones, and can be done on all areas of the face and body where there is unwanted hair. Our Cynosure Apogee Elite laser uses a specialized cooling air system during the laser treatment for minimal discomfort during the procedure.

You will need to wear protective eyewear. Only a few minutes are needed to treat most areas: some smaller areas can be done in 5 minutes, while larger areas can take up to 30 minutes. Ice packs may be used post-treatment to prevent inflammation, speed-up recovery, and provide pain relief. Direct sun and heat should be avoided right after treatment, and sunscreen should be used to protect your skin afterward.

FAQs

Laser hair removal uses a concentrated laser (a beam of light) that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. This causes damage to the hair follicle, which decreases future hair growth. Laser hair removal is a treatment option for most hair and skin tones, except for blond hair or gray hair.

Yes, it can be done anywhere on the body, including sensitive areas. Both bikini line and Brazilian laser hair removal are popular treatments. Laser hair removal is used often on the upper lip, cheeks, hands and feet, forearms, underarms, back, and legs.

There is some minimal discomfort, and laser hair removal falls somewhere between shaving (painless) and waxing (painful). We use a Cynosure Apogee Elite laser that uses a specialized cooling air system on the treatment area to help minimize any discomfort. Many patients say that it feels like being snapped by a rubber band.

Laser hair removal is quick and efficient. The treatment time is based on the size of the treatment area. Small areas take just 5 minutes, while larger areas can take up to 30 minutes.

Most patients have great results after an average of 4-6 treatment sessions. In some cases, more sessions are needed. Sometimes a touch-up session is needed in the future.

The cost can vary from $50-$2000 depending on the treatment area. Small areas cost less than larger areas.

Yes, it can be safely performed during your menstrual cycle. It is important to stay consistent with your treatment schedule.

Because the laser beam causes the hair to absorb heat, the laser can burn the hair and subsequently the surrounding skin. Proper skin preparation with shaving will make your treatment more effective and ensure that you can proceed with your scheduled treatment.

This may happen up to a month after treatment due to small amounts of dead hair falling out from the damaged follicle. Gentle exfoliation can help with this.

Wait at least 3-4 days after your treatment to avoid irritating the skin. You may notice some hair shedding shortly after your treatment.

Laser hair removal is contraindicated while taking Accutane or blood thinners if you have a current herpes outbreak, have keloid scars, and with pregnancy and breastfeeding. Topical retinoids must be discontinued prior to each treatment.

Avoid strenuous exercise, sun exposure, and hot showers after each treatment session.

Both laser and IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, use heat to damage the hair follicle and prevent regrowth, and the device is placed on top of the skin. IPL usually requires more treatments and is less effective and more painful than laser hair removal, and can not be performed on darker skin tones.

Electrolysis uses a fine probe that is inserted into the opening of each hair follicle to deliver heat to cause damage, and the hair is removed with a small tweezer, one at a time.
